Dedicated to working in what may seem to some an out-dated discipline, using a medium format camera and film Toby’s aim is to capture the calm but rugged qualities of our superb and varied shoreline. A long period is needed to prepare and research each photograph, beginning by studying an ordnance survey map then visiting the chosen area to view it from every angle but the sea itself. In this way, Toby has an unusually detailed knowledge of the cliffs and beaches that surround us and he also has an acute sense of the weather conditions and tides which must always be taken into account before setting out on a night shoot. The images are constructed over several hours highlighting the passing of time and unseen changes in the landscape.
