The components of Clare’s jewellery are predominately based on the recycling of old found media, mainly paper finds such as postcards, letters, stamps and maps - most having an emphasis on handwriting and the printed text. The materials chosen are used for their associations, memories and the intrigue we recognise in them. These finds have been transported away from their original use and are now in a context within the present.
The found paper is combined with metalwork using traditional jewellery making techniques. The elements are randomly incorporated into each piece to produce a unique item.
In 1997, Clare graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA (Hons) in Jewellery and Silversmithing. She is a member of Contemporary Applied Arts in London and of Design-ED, a group of 13 applied artists based in and around Edinburgh. The group meets regularly to encourage, inspire and support each other and is committed to setting up exciting and collaborative exhibitions.
