Edinburgh Festival - Hots & Nots

Julianna Grove is based in Edinburgh and as many know we are currently heading into the second week of the biggest arts festival in the world. Unsurprisingly, the city is bulging at the seams with performers, visitors, reviewers, pick-pocketers and publicity seeking wannabes – it’s a bit crazy.

Now a few of us here at Julianna were taught by their mothers the importance of a bargain, so most of the shows we’ve seen were in cheap previews and discount opening weekend. Which means no reviews or word of mouth – it was pure fluke whether a show was any good. Here are some of our highlights so far:

~How George Formby Saved My Life (learn to play the ukulele in an hour): funny and really did exactly what it said on the tin
~Tim Mitchin: such a talented musician with hilarious songs, which were much better than his chat between songs
~The Man Who Planted Trees: gentle and heart warming if you’re in Edinburgh go, if you’re not come just to see this show
~The Aluminium Show: dance and aluminium not the most natural of bedfellows but a great spectacle of a show, although some segments are much better than others
~Footsbarn – A Midsummer Nights Dream: in a big top on Calton Hill, pure storytelling with great masks
