but chocolate as well

Brilliant news today that Dairy Milk, Britain’s most popular chocolate is to become Fairtrade certified in Britain and Ireland. This will double the amount of cocoa bought from smallholders in the developing world under the sustainable farming scheme.
This is great news in Fair-trade fortnight, it shows that big business does listen.

not just bananas

Fair trade fortnight is now under way - 23rd February - 8th March
Two billion people – a third of humanity – still survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change too. Fairtrade is a people’s movement for change that aims to tip the balance of trade in favour of poor producers. We all need Fairtrade more than ever and we all have the power to create positive change for people and planet.

Make it happen. Choose Fairtrade.

keeping good company

You know when you’re choosing to work with the right people when they win awards. Well last week our graphic designer, Margaret Scott, was 42nd in the 100 most eligible women in Scotland. Now that’s the kind of award you want to win! Congrats Margaret.

Manbags - some questions answered

Manbags are no laughed at but instead are seen as practical, stylish and entirely suitable for a real man to carry in the 21st century. Below are some interviews with a couple of men who love their bags (originally published in the Guardian).

Manbag - Julianna Grove
Julianna Grove has a small range of manbags by designer Katherine Emtage (incidentally they could make a great Valentine’s Day present for those of you who have left it to the last minute).

Conor McNicholas
Editor of NME

What’s in your manbag?
Unopened post, cab receipts - I spend half my life in cabs - BlackBerry, cheque book, RayBans, lighter, keys, business cards, foldaway umbrella, pencil, Snickers bar, striped mini-notebook, super-fast-acting Nurofen because you never know how bad the hangover is going to be, pen, two-way connector for my iPod, bottle opener and phone charger. My bag is a key to being able to do my job. I would like to travel light but there are so many bits that I just need to have with me. Sennheiser CX300 headphones - they are amazing, they cut out all the other sound and the bass is wonderful. God forbid I leave my iPod at home or in the office - I couldn’t bear the thought of not listening to music when I’m out and about.

Where did you get your bag?
Selfridges. It’s entirely functional. I couldn’t even tell you what make it is, but it had to be leather or rubber. My bag spends a lot of time on the floor in pubs and clubs. I needed something bright, so I could find it immediately. I think there is even still some Glastonbury mud on the clasp and there are badges on the bag that I think have lasted longer than some of the bands’ careers.

How do you feel about the term manbag?
It’s really derogatory, isn’t it?

Dermot O’Leary
TV presenter

What’s in your manbag?
Diary and notebook, pen, lip balm - thanks to the petroleum base I now feel weirdly addicted to it - water, Empire magazine - I seem to read about films rather than going to see them. I always have a Harry Morgan’s plastic bag in there, too, which I try to re-use. And a phone, though I’m not a big technology boy.

Where did you get your bag?
I’ve got a little collection now. My favourite bag is a Liberty one, which I got a couple of years ago for Christmas. It’s dark olive and has a brown leather strap and trim. It’s just got two big handles - so it’s carried through the arm and over the shoulder. There is one zip compartment for change and the aforementioned lip balm.

Could you cope without the bag?
No. The other day I went out without it and it was like forgetting your mobile or having the stabilisers taken off your bike when you are a kid - you can do it but it doesn’t feel right.

How do you feel about the term manbag?
I think we should embrace it - I like it. There’s not enough in fashion that guys can own.

Have you ever had a hard time from anyone for carrying a bag?
No! I’d take issue with anyone that gave me a hard time for having a bag.

National Tree Week

In celebration of National Tree Week (26 November - 7 December) we have launched our new range of Christmas Decorations by Hannah Ayre. Hannah is an environmental artist (and a big lover of trees). She creates art and crafts from a variety of media, usually from reclaimed materials, ranging from small-scale craft items to large-scale outdoor sculpture. Through her work she aims to raise awareness of environmental issues and to attain minimal environmental impact through her creative output.

Her new Christmas decorations have imprints of beech, oak, sycamore and seed helicopters. She has also developed a new range using more traditional Christmas images.

Edinburgh Festival - Hots & Nots

Julianna Grove is based in Edinburgh and as many know we are currently heading into the second week of the biggest arts festival in the world. Unsurprisingly, the city is bulging at the seams with performers, visitors, reviewers, pick-pocketers and publicity seeking wannabes – it’s a bit crazy.

Now a few of us here at Julianna were taught by their mothers the importance of a bargain, so most of the shows we’ve seen were in cheap previews and discount opening weekend. Which means no reviews or word of mouth – it was pure fluke whether a show was any good. Here are some of our highlights so far:

~How George Formby Saved My Life (learn to play the ukulele in an hour): funny and really did exactly what it said on the tin
~Tim Mitchin: such a talented musician with hilarious songs, which were much better than his chat between songs
~The Man Who Planted Trees: gentle and heart warming if you’re in Edinburgh go, if you’re not come just to see this show
~The Aluminium Show: dance and aluminium not the most natural of bedfellows but a great spectacle of a show, although some segments are much better than others
~Footsbarn – A Midsummer Nights Dream: in a big top on Calton Hill, pure storytelling with great masks

creative people

Working in the creative industries we at Julianna Grove come across many talented and imaginative people. We particularly enjoy discovering people who really push their imagination to the limit, and so we were very happy last week when we discovered these business card designers. Being the eco chicks that we are, we loved the seed and the secondhand designs. Click on the link to the [re]encoded blog to see some more: ~ [re]encoded blog
